Hob and Splashback Cleaning in Peterborough: Where Grease Hides

Hob cleaning in Peterborough kitchens is a job that looks finished when it isn't. The top of the hob wipes clean in seconds, but grease hides behind the knobs and around the burners, and it spreads onto the splashback behind. A proper hob and splashback clean deals with all of it, and leaves the steel gleaming.

Where grease hides on a hob

  • Behind and around the knobs. Splashes get into the gaps and the surrounds, where a cloth does not reach.

  • Around the burners. Fat and food settle in the small spaces and on the rims.

  • Pan supports and burner caps. They sit in the middle of the mess and take the worst of it.

  • The splashback. Grease mists upwards and coats the steel or tiles behind the hob.

  • The cooker hood and the wall units above. Grease collects on the underside and the edges.

  • The edges of the worktop. Spills run down the sides and into the corners.

Why it matters

Grease is sticky, so it traps dust and crumbs, and a hob that is only ever wiped on top slowly builds up a layer underneath. It also gets harder to remove with each use, because the heat bakes it on. Cleaning a hob while the build-up is light is far quicker than tackling thick, dark residue.

A clean hob and splashback also make the whole kitchen look better. Gleaming steel catches the eye, and so does a layer of grease.

What a proper hob and splashback clean involves

Make sure the hob is switched off and has cooled completely, and that any gas is turned off at the hob. Then:

  1. Remove what lifts off. Take off pan supports, burner caps and any knobs that are designed to come off. Check your manufacturer's instructions first.

  2. Soak and wash the parts. Wash them in warm soapy water, working at the grease with a soft brush or non-scratch pad, then rinse and dry them.

  3. Wipe the hob surface. Clean around the burners, the rims and the edges of the hob.

  4. Clean around the knobs. Wipe the surrounds and the gaps behind them, using a small brush or a cloth over a fingertip.

  5. Do the splashback. Wipe from the top down, then buff steel with a dry cloth, following the grain, so it shines without streaks.

  6. Clean the cooker hood. Wipe the underside and the front.

  7. Dry and refit. Make sure everything is dry, put the parts back correctly and check the burners sit properly.

Tips to keep a hob in good shape

  • Wipe the hob and splashback once they have cooled, while splashes are still soft.

  • Wash the pan supports weekly in a busy kitchen.

  • Use a splatter guard or lid on pans that spit.

  • Use only cleaners that are suitable for steel and for your type of hob.

  • Never mix cleaning products. Follow the label on each one.

Hob cleaning FAQs

How often should I clean my hob?

Wipe it once it has cooled down from cooking. Do a fuller clean, including the pan supports and the area around the knobs, weekly or whenever you notice grease building up.

Can I put pan supports in the dishwasher?

Some can, but not all. Check your manufacturer's instructions first, because some finishes can be damaged.

How do I stop streaks on a steel splashback?

Wipe off the grease with warm soapy water, rinse, then dry and buff with a clean cloth, following the grain of the steel.

Is hob cleaning part of a kitchen clean?

Yes. The hob and splashback are a core part of a proper kitchen clean. Tell us if you would like extra attention there.
